Day Two
Denver, Colorado to Custer, South Dakota
This second day was considerably shorter that our first day
(thankfully). We thought we would be able to get a bit of a later start and
we’d be just fine. Before we hit the road and put Denver behind us we had to
make a stop at an old friend’s house. One of my mission buddies, Reed Haight,
and his family live in Denver and since we were in town we figured we should
stop by, since they invited us and all. We had a wonderful breakfast to
supplement our toast assortment that we had at our lovely hotel. We had some
delicious biscuits and gravy with fresh strawberry jam.
Once we finally got on
the road we were ready to put some road behind us and get to Custer. The drive
was pretty uneventful and at one point Jess asked, “is this Wyoming?” to which
I responded “Yep.” I had the exact same thought. Wyoming is a lovely state,
just not the eastern part…it’s booooooooring and incredibly desolate. We
finally made it to Custer and by chance found our campground and our teepee (is
it tipi, teepee or tepee? Not sure but we’re pretty awesome either way. We know
you guys are totally jealous. It’s ok, you can admit it, we’ll let you……go
ahead……didn’t that feel better?) for the night.
We needed food so we drove into
Custer to find a tasty meal. We went to the restaurant that the nice ladies at
the campground recommended, The Captain’s Table. It was an odd assortment of
seafood with steak…in a nautical themed building with black bathroom fixtures,
classy (that’s for you Nancy). I bet this was the classiest place in town. It
was so classy they even had rose colored lights in one section, just for the romance.
The prime rib we both ordered if you liked prime rib, I do and as we found out
Jess doesn’t. (She says it smells like wet dog and feet). After dinner we went for a walk in downtown
Custer. There wasn’t a whole lot to see other than a ton of tourist shops and
empty store fronts. When we got back to the campground we got some firewood and
Jess started a fire for us and subsequently danced around the flickering flames
that licked at our every movement…and sangeded she was firewoman so we sat
around our teepee and played our little ukulele and enjoyed the beautiful
weather. It turned out to be an amazing night and it was dark.
